New Arrivals from Orgo: Elegant, Fresh Qvevri Wines

a qvevri of Saperavi in Orgo's marani

Georgian Wine House is pleasedto let you know that we have added Orgo’s 2014 vintages to our extensive Georgian Wine portfolio. Both the 2014 Orgo Rkatsiteli and 2014 Orgo Saperavi are amazing wines, reflecting on the centuries old winemaking tradition of the Dakishvili family, while at the same time bringing the Kakhetian style winemaking method to another level of development.

2014 was a trying year for grapes in Kakheti. Multiple negative climatic events, such as drought and hail impacted vineyards. But Orgo wines are produced from grapes collected from 70-80 year old vine trees with limited yield per tree. The older trees with their deeper roots are more resilient to the negative impact of drought, and produce grapes with more concentrated and rich flavors.

Orgo Rkatsiteli 2014

For those of you who are not accustomed to white wines that are made with skin contact, the Orgo Rkatsiteli 2014 is your best chance to start enjoying this style of wines. While rich in flavors, this is still a very friendly wine with light tannins. The Orgo Rkatsiteli sees six months of aging on the skins in Qvevri and has a pleasant bouquet of wild flowers with notes of dried apple and apricots, followed by a complex aftertaste of sweet spices and dried herbs and finishing light tannins. Try with grilled pork, creamy pasta or Georgian Khachapuri.

Orgo Saperavi 2014

The 2014 vintage of Saperavi like Orgo’s previous vintages is sourced from approximately 80 year old vines and is fermented and aged in Qvevri. The 2014 Saperavi has full bouquet of ripe cherry, blackberries and hints of chocolate followed by a full-bodied wine finishing with warm and silky tannins. This excellent Saperavi has a freshness of a young wine and the elegance and maturity of aged wine. Orgo 2014  is great to drink now but also has great aging potential.

This wine opens an opportunity for sophisticated connoisseurs of Georgian wines to try a vertical tasting of three consecutive vintages of Orgo Saperavi – 2012, 2013 and 2014. These are very different wines. 2012 vintage is about subtlety, 2013 vintage is about power, and 2014 is about freshness. They also have a common denomination – elegance!! The vision and character of these two Orgo wines prove that Georgian winemaking culture stands in the vanguard of the global winemaking.

About Orgo Winery

Orgo is small artisan winery, located in Kakheti in eastern Georgia that produces all of their natural wines in qvevri. The head wine maker, Temur Dakishvili, is a young Georgian winemaker who grew up in the family of the prominent Georgian winemaker Gogi Dakishvili. Temur’s youth and energy coupled with Gogi’s experience and wisdom create a unique partnership.  Their families dedication to traditional Georgian winemaking has visible effects, from their centuries old qvevris in their marani (cellar) to the 100 year old Saperavi vine tree growing in their family yard. Temur is tasked like his father’s before him to live inside a tradition, to guard it but importantly to to grow it.

The mission of Orgo and this partnership is to preserve older vines in Georgia by making singularly unique wines that add their own elegance and refinement to the 8,000 year old Georgian wine making tradition.
